Tips on designing for large format posters

First of all, decide your canvas size and our standard sizes for posters is 11 inches by 17 inches and 18 inches by 24 inches. Consequently, anything larger than these two standard sizes is considered a custom job and we would need to give you special pricing.

Secondly, decide if you will be using a bitmap or a vector image. Usually, digital images and scanned pictures are classified as bitmap files and are sometimes also called raster images. Additionally, most designers use a program like Photoshop for their creation and save their print images in JPG or TIFF format. Images made in applications like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw are usually vector graphics and saved as PDF or EPS format. One more thing about vector graphics: Don’t forget to convert your fonts to outlines since some printers sometimes do not use the latest design software, and this could delay your print job.

Another thing to know is canvas bleed which can be confusing to new designers. Background bleed is the area that extends beyond the trim edge and leaves no white margin. This area should be at least .125” on the height and width of a canvas. Most print jobs should have bleed to ensure none of your design message is lost in trimming.

Another thing to know, some large format designs do not require the resolution to be 300 dpi – like smaller business cards and postcards. A good rule of thumb: if the design is larger than 11” x 17” then a resolution of 150 dpi should suffice. Finally, always archive your original art files in their native format (e.g., AI, PSD, etc.), you never know when you might need a quick re-design of an old print job.
